Mat Mania! How to choose the right yoga mat? by BECKY CATTO-SMITH

Thickness

Ideally you want the perfect combo between the right cushioning (to support your body) whilst still remaining connected to the ground. The standard mat is 3mm thick however it you have bad knees or sore spots and want some extra cushioning try a thicker mat closer to 5mm thick. Don’t be afraid to try before you buy!

Material / Texture

Commonly exercise mats are made with PVC (polyvinyl chloride) which is cost effective and keeps slippage to a minimum. However PVC isn’t doing the environment any favours. The toxic plastic is difficult to recycle so try your best to avoid it at all costs! Choose materials such as recycles rubber, cotton or even bamboo.

Stickiness

Stickiness is key! You don’t want to be slipping and sliding preventing you from achieving the perfect downward dog. Find the eco friendly option made from natural materials with the slight raised texture or naturally slip resistant rubber to avoid slipping through your poses.

Eco-friendliness

PVC is in the past! When looking at exercise mat materials, ensure there is no latex, silicone, toxic glue, PVC or phthalates. Natural and biodegradable materials are always best.

Style

Thankfully the decision between the bright blue or pink mat has expanded. There are not only varied textures but we now have the luxury of styling our mats to our active wear! Yepeee! Pattern, colour, texture and a big punch of personality!
